Top 10 Underhyped Windows Apps

Some apps are essential, and everyone who's anyone knows to have them on their computer. Some apps, however, are fantastic, yet fly under the radar. Today, we look at our top 10 underhyped apps on Windows.

We've shared our favorite underhyped webapps a few times before, but we were shocked to find we hadn't done the same for our beloved desktops. So, this week, we're tackling Windows. Come back next week to see our favorite underhyped Mac apps!

10. WizMouse

WizMouse is that app you never knew you wanted until you use it. It allows you to scroll in windows when you mouse over them, not just after you click on them?something OS X and Linux have built-in, but Windows is seemingly missing. It may seem trivial, but after using it for awhile, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. It'll even enable the mouse wheel in applications that don't support it, or even reverse the direction for the "natural" scrolling some people prefer. Check out our original post on it for more.

9. Skitch

Skitch isn't necessarily the best screenshot tool around, but it's long been our favorite screenshot annotation tool for the Mac, and now it's on Windows. It's amazing what a few well-placed arrows, text, and shapes can do when you're trying to explain something?and, while you could just do it in Microsoft Paint, Skitch makes it look good (and easy). If you use Evernote, the Evernote integration is pretty great too.

8. PotPlayer

You've probably heard of PotPlayer before?after all, it's our App Directory pick for the best video player on Windows. Despite that, however, it seems to be a much lesser-known app that deserves more attention. It's fast, lightweight, and has more settings for tweaking your video than you can shake a stick at (plus it can play just about any video you throw at it). As such, it earns higher praise from us than more popular players like VLC, at least if you want those advanced settings. If you've been using another player and want more, PotPlayer is where you'll find it.

7. Bins

Windows' taskbar is still the best taskbar around, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Bins is a simple $5 app that adds a few really handy features to the taskbar, most notably the ability to group multiple apps into one square. Click on that square and it'll launch the primary app, but hover over it, and you can choose which app to launch. It's perfect for those that have multiple music players, photo editors, or other things that you don't want taking up space on your taskbar. 6. Chocolatey

Chocolatey brings Linux's lightning-fast, super configurable package management to Windows. What does that mean? It means you can install a ton of apps at once (perfect for clean installs) with no effort. Or, you can try out that new app without having to find its site, download the file, and install it yourself. Everything happens with just a few keystrokes. 5. Dexpot

Dexpot is an awesome little utility that adds a ton of features to the windows on your desktop?and gives them all sorts of shortcuts. Its main purpose is to split your desktop up into four different workspaces, much like the Spaces feature on OS X or the Workspaces feature on Ubuntu. It can also make windows transparent, give you an Expos?-like view of all your open windows, and more. If your desktop is starting to feel a little cluttered with Windows, Dexpot is the perfect app to save your productivity.

4. Growl

Growl is an incredibly popular program on the Mac, but its Windows version doesn't get a lot of attention?despite the fact that its grown into quite the notification system. Growl essentially puts all the popups, balloons, and other notifications on your desktop into one unified system that you can control, customize, sent to other machines, or even forward to your phone. It supports a ton of popular apps, and it's very easy to set up. Check out our guide to Growl for Windows for more info.

3. MusicBee

At first glance, MusicBee seems like just another music player for Windows, but it's actually the perfect balance between the existing programs out there. It's fully-featured, like Winamp, but much lighter weight, and 100% free. It's not quite as customizable as foobar2000, but is much easier to use, and has more than enough customization features for the average user. It's even got a lot of tagging features for those that might be considering something like MediaMonkey. Plus, it syncs with Android phones superbly. Does it beat out any of these players at their specialty features? No, but it has a little bit of everything, is super lightweight, and is sure to fit into anyone's workflow. If you haven't found a music player you truly love, try it out. It was a contender in our Hive Five on desktop music players, but barely scraped together 6% of the final vote, so we're still considering it very underhyped.

2. Nircmd

Nircmd isn't an "app" in the traditional sense of the word, but it's something we think every life hacker should have on their Windows computer. Essentially, Nircmd is a command line tool that performs all sorts of system functions with really easy-to-understand commands. Sound boring? Combine it with AutoHotkey?one of Windows' most deservedly hyped apps?and you can perform nearly any system task with one keystroke. You can open or close your CD drive, start your screensaver, put your computer to sleep, change the volume, speak the text on the clipboard, kill instances of any program, or perform over 70 other tasks. 1. OneNote

Microsoft's note-taking application OneNote is one of those apps no one really talks about much, but is absolutely loved by everyone who uses it. Heck, you guys even voted it your favorite outlining tool, personal project management tool, and minutes meeting service, not to mention third place for best note taking app. It's available for a ton of platforms, too (despite it being part of Microsoft Office), so if you're finding that Evernote just isn't quite powerful enough for your organizational needs, give OneNote a shot?you might be surprised at everything it can do given its lesser-known status.

Horse slaughtering legal in US, but public won't bite

The discovery of horse DNA in food products sold throughout Europe has set off a scandal, shaking confidence in Europe's food industry and angering consumers.

But believe it or not, it?s actually legal to slaughter horses for human consumption in the U.S. In November 2011, Congress quietly lifted a five-year ban on funding for horse processing inspections.

Since the ban was lifted, no horse slaughterhouses have successfully opened, according to Holly Hazard, a senior vice president at the Humane Society of the United States who tracks equine rights issues.

?We have yet to have a new [horse processing] facility open in this country,? Hazard said, adding that attempts to open slaughterhouses in New Mexico and Missouri last year were scrapped due to public outrage.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said that if a horse slaughtering plant were to open, the agency would perform inspections to ensure it complied with federal laws.

Before Congress defunded inspections in 2007, there were just three equine processing plants in the continental U.S. -- two in Texas, one in Illinois. All three facilities were shuttered when the slaughtering ban took effect, the Associated Press reported.

At the peak of their production powers, these slaughterhouses primarily exported horsemeat to Mexico and Canada for human consumption, Hazard said.?

One advocate of selling horse meat said that the removal of the ban allows the horse processing industry to regain a foothold in the market.

"Eighty percent of a $102 billion-a-year industry was directly affected when they took slaughter away," said David Duquette, president of the United Horsemen, a group that lobbied to lift the ban.?

Duquette added that there are ongoing efforts to revive the horse meat processing industry, but declined to provide additional information about those attempts.

Animal rights activists, meanwhile, are confident that widespread repulsion at the thought of eating horse meat will keep it out of the mainstream.

"There are certainly communities that have considered [reviving horse slaughtering]," said Nancy Perry, a senior vice president at the ASPCA. But the vast majority of Americans -- a staggering 80 percent, according to a recent ASPCA poll -- oppose the practice, Perry said.

'Companions and partners, not food'
Polling data and public opinion suggest it's highly unlikely horse meat will move to the center of American culinary culture. After all, they?re the stars of beloved children?s literature, Hollywood movies, and Wild West folklore.

?We believe horses are iconic figures in American culture,? Hazard said. ?The vast majority of Americans think they?re companions and partners, not food.?

Hazard said she?s not aware of any attempts to introduce horse meat on restaurant menus. The one exception: a proposal, in September of last year, to serve Canadian-bred horse tartare -- also known as raw horse meat -- at a museum restaurant in New York City.

However, M. Wells Dinette's prospective menu item at MoMA PS1?was scuttled after animal rights activists and public health officials cried foul.

The restaurant?s chef and co-owner, Hugue Dufour, released a statement after the controversy subsided defending his exotic dish.

?We thought about serving it because we like to offer customers new things,? the statement said. ?Whatever else horses are ? draft animals, companions, transport ? their meat is also delicious and affordable.?

Nevertheless, most Americans still consider horse meat off-limits, although that hasn't always been the case.

At the close of World War II, when beef was in short supply, many Americans got their protein boosts from horse meat. Republicans blamed the meat scarcity on President Truman, giving him the nickname ?Horsemeat Harry.?

During the early 1970s, beef prices went through the roof, forcing cash-strapped shoppers to buy cheap horse meat instead. The custom was so common it showed up as a subplot on a 1973 episode of the sitcom ?All in the Family.?

Harvard University?s Faculty Club reportedly served horse meat for more than 100 years before it dropped the menu item in the 1980s.

How to get to Sagada | Complete Travel Guide | Backpacking ...

Who would have thought that in this very remote part of the country you will find this small town with so much to offer, may it be eerie burial caves and hanging coffins, chilly waterfalls, gastronomic food, glossy and shimmering lake and cloud-capped mountains...name anything and you can find it in Sagada. Added to these is its bone-chilling weather making Sagada a good destination for summer getaway.

Sorry to say, but there is no direct trip to Sagada from Manila. It can only be reached via these routes (Manila-Baguio-Sagada; or Manila-Banaue/Bontoc-Sagada). Tourist going to Sagada usually took the Manila-Baguio-Sagada route because of its accessibility. Basically all of these routes has the same travel time and fare it only differ on the scenes/views you can see along the way. Here in this post, I will be giving you a complete guide about how to go to Sagada from Manila or Cubao or the alternative routes to Sagada.

1. Manila-Baguio-Sagada Route
There are hourly bus trips plying to the city of Pines, Baguio City from Pasay, Cubao or Caloocan terminal, fare pegged at PHP445 and travel time would take approximately 5-6 hours. It is advisable to travel no later than 12 midnight to that you can reached the first trip bus bound for Sagada at 6AM. The bus terminal in Baguio that plies the Sagada route is at Dangwa terminal which is about 10 minutes cab from Victory Liner Terminal just inform your cab driver that you will be going to Sagada. Non air-conditioned buses (Lizardo or GL Transit) to Sagada ?depart daily from 6AM to 1PM. Travel time from Baguio to Sagada could take 6 to 7 hours and fare should be PHP220. Your drop off point would be at Sagada Municipal Hall.

2. Manila-Banaue/Bontoc-Sagada
There is only one bus that offers that Manila-Banaue Route - the Ohayami bus line and their terminal is located at Sampaloc Manila. Time of departure is at 9PM, make sure to catch this trip because extra buses would only run on peak season. You can also make reservation beforehand (02)-5160501. Fare is PHP450 and travel time could take 8-9 hours because bus makes regular stop every 2 hours.

At the Banaue bus terminal, there are jeepneys or mini-bus that plies directly to Sagada. This trip would cost PHP300 per person and travel time from Banaue to Sagada is another 3-4 hours. The downside of this route is that jeepneys would not live the terminal until there are 4 passengers. So if you are travelling alone this is not a good option. Alternatively, you can take jeepneys bound for Bontoc from Banaue. Fare is PHP150 and travel time is 2-3 hours. Jeepneys plying this route is stationed at Banaue Public Market, just be there before 9AM to catch this trip. Then from Bontoc you can take another jeepney (1.5 hours) bound for Sagada.

Here are my top list of things you can enjoy in Sagada

1. Spelunking | Cave connection Sumaging to Lumiang. The entire cave connection could take approximately 5 hours. Every activity in Sagada, a guide is required and this can be booked at the SAGGAS office.
2. Trek to Bomod-ok Falls. Unfortunately I have not tried this because there was a certain ritual performed at the time of my visit.
3. Trek Pongas Falls. This is the newest attraction in Sagada.
4. Camping at lake danum or Mt. Ampacao
5. Witnessed the Panag-apoy festival
6. Walking tour at Sagada town (museum, pottery, weaving,?Episcopal parish, etc.)
7. Up close with the burial caves and hanging coffins
8. Sunrise viewing at Kiltepan Viewpoint
9. Food porn (Yoghurt House, Lemon Pie House, Log Cabin, pinikpikan, etc)
