93% Headhunters

All Critics (59) | Top Critics (12) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (4)

Headhunters is slick and spritely, a mixture of corporate skullduggery and low-life slapstick that plays like The Firm meets Blood Simple.

"Headhunters" is a well-oiled, nasty machine.

That's some good acting by Hennie, but it's also good writing by co-scribes Lars Gudmestad and Ulf Ryberg. They freshen up familiar caper and thriller tropes, adapting the bestselling prose Norwegian crime writer Jo Nesbo.

This Norwegian thriller has a winning cutthroat perversity.

At a time when many mystery thrillers fall apart in the final fifteen minutes, Headhunters maintains its integrity.

The sex, nudity and violence are nonstop, but that's what makes "Headhunters" exciting entertainment.

A brisk, violent tour of the dangerous parts of Norway.

Whatever the cinematic equivalent of a kick in the pants might be, you'll find it at Headhunters.

Headhunters works best when punishing its lead excessively, continuously, and for no apparent reason.

...a first-class thriller with tension-enhancing music and Hitchcockian-quality cinematography highlighted by a sparkling performance by Aksel Hennie.

To say too much about this taut, and often quite gory, shocking and surprising twisty mystery would spoil the freezer-burn fun.

I can't remember the last time a movie surprised me as much as "Headhunters": not just its story twists and turns, which are considerable, but its continual stripping of character veneer and overall audaciousness left me breathless.

A nasty little crime thriller from Norway that twists you into a state of tense uncertainty right up to the end.

Headhunters is ridiculous, macabre, fun - see the original before it's irrevocably ruined by it's Hollywood remake.

With the twists of a cyclone and humor that on occasion edges close to farce, it's a knife-cutting satire that's not above a bellylaugh.

Acting is first rate, with a stellar turn by Aksel Hennie, and direction by Morten Tyldum is solid. I love seeing a terrific film from a place where you least expect it.

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

(AP) ? The "like" button on Facebook seems like a relatively clear way to express your support for something, but a federal judge says that doesn't mean clicking it is constitutionally protected speech.

Exactly what a "like" means ? if anything ? played a part in a case in Virginia involving six people who say Hampton Sheriff B.J. Roberts fired them for supporting an opponent in his 2009 re-election bid, which he won. The workers sued, saying their First Amendment rights were violated.

Roberts said some of the workers were let go because he wanted to replace them with sworn deputies while others were fired because of poor performance or his belief that their actions "hindered the harmony and efficiency of the office."

One of those workers, Daniel Ray Carter, had "liked" the Facebook page of Roberts' opponent, Jim Adams.

While public employees are allowed to speak as citizens on matters of public concern, U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson ruled that clicking the "like" button does not amount to expressive speech. In other words, it's not the same as actually writing out a message and posting it on the site.

The case enters a murky legal area: Previous cases have dealt with postings on social networks such as Facebook, but there are no explicit words in this situation. Marcus Messner, a journalism and mass communications professor at Virginia Commonwealth University who specializes in social media, said it was likely the matter would have to be settled by a higher court.

"Going to a candidate's Facebook page and liking it in my view is a political statement. It's not a very deep one, but you're making a statement when you like a person's Facebook page," Messner said.

James Shoemaker, an attorney for one of the fired workers, said he was surprised by Jackson's April 24 opinion and order and would appeal it.

Jackson acknowledged that other courts have ruled that Facebook posts are constitutionally protected speech, but he said in those cases there were "actual statements." Simply clicking a button is much different and doesn't warrant First Amendment protection, he wrote.

"The court will not attempt to infer the actual content of Carter's post from one click of a button on Adams' Facebook page," Jackson wrote.

However, First Amendment scholars said there isn't much to infer: "Liking" a Facebook page is much like putting a bumper sticker on a car or wearing a button. One critic of the ruling is Eugene Volokh, a law professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, who critiqued the judge's decision in a blog posting.

In an interview, Volokh said while a "like" could be ambiguous, there's no question it counts as speech. A thumbs-up gesture is symbolic expression protected by the First Amendment, for instance, and "liking" something on Facebook is even more clearly expressive because it generates text on a computer screen, he said.

"It is conveying a message to others. It may just involve just a couple of mouse clicks, or maybe just one mouse click, but the point of that mouse click, a major point of that mouse click, is to inform others that you like whatever that means," he said.

Roberts, the sheriff, doesn't use Facebook but has acknowledged in court documents that he knew about Carter's post. Carter said in court documents that Roberts was so angry about the Facebook postings that he thought he might actually punch him following a staff meeting where Carter and another fired worker's Facebook post ? which was later deleted ? were mentioned.

In his ruling, the judge acknowledged the need to weigh whether the employee's speech was a substantial factor in being fired. But the judge wrote that the point is moot if "liking" something isn't constitutionally protected speech.

Don Herzog, a law professor at the University of Michigan, said Jackson's ruling raises questions about the power of the government to determine what should be taken seriously in politics when it comes to protected speech.

"It is for sure a thin statement, but it is clearly within what we do all the time as democratic citizens," Herzog said. "This is one of the ways we talk about politics in our society."

Selecting The Best Home Improvement Loan ? Home Equity Debt ...

The Empire of Debt by Dee Hon by Renegade98Home improvement loans are functional for any kind of improvement or home extension. Home improvement loan can be availed for double glazing, new conservatory, heating system, new kitchen, rewiring and plumbing or any home remodeling that you can think of. The cost of home improvements is generally paid by savings or revolving credits like credit or store cards. Credit cards imply no borrowing. In many ways it is idyllic for there are no repayments to be made. But credit cards can be an expensive option especially if the borrowing extends beyond the credit limit.

7 Ways to Consolidate Your Debt

This method should be used with great care. Homeowners can refinance their mortgages for more than the current balance, pay off the old loan with the money and pocket the cash remainder to pay off bills. This method will often provide the lowest interest rate, but the closing costs on the loan may not be worth the effort, depending on the amount of debt you are consolidating. In addition, you are stretching the debt out over the life of the mortgage which could end up costing more in finance charges. If you pay off your credit card debt with the cash and keep using the credit cards, you are only putting yourself deeper in debt and putting your home at risk. On the plus side, the interest you pay on the debt becomes tax deductible.

Getting Benefited With Low Home Equity Line Of Credit Rates

Furthermore, as the home equity line of credit rates offered for bad credit could be substantially high, you need to engage yourself in a bit of some research online. To that effect, you could apply and get numerous free non-obligatory proposals provided by different lenders and compare them by either using an online mortgage loan calculator or by making use of various comparison websites that are available online at your disposal. This could enable you to find a suitable HELOC lender who provides you with the lowest rates of interests and the best possible terms. In any case, before applying for a home equity based mortgage, expert advice is recommended.

What?s the Deal with Home Equity?

Home equity loans are sometimes called ?home improvement loans.? Giving your home more value should be the primary reason you consider home equity loans. ?If you want to put an addition on your home, fix it up somewhat, or do some more expensive wear-and-tear maintenance, a home equity loan is a viable option. If you are doing home improvements, make sure that you compare your home equity rates with home loan rates. If the home loan rates are better, then consider doing that instead.

Anna Paquin on Bisexuality: A Real Thing!

Yes, Anna Paquin reiterates in the latest issue of Zooey. She's bisexual.

But, no, this isn't some cop-out because she can't choose between a man and a woman. Ignoring the fact that she has selected a man - co-star Stephen Moyer, with whom she's expecting a baby - Paquin gives her view on the topic to the magazine as follows:

Anna Paquin for Zooey

"I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing. It’s not made up. It’s not a lack of decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point. For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to.”

Paquin - who gets flak for some morons regarding her teeth - also has an interesting take on plastic surgery and the pressure on Hollywood actresses to have a certain appearance.

"If you have a whole bunch of work done with your teeth and your face and your boobs, then you’re only going to play modern people. That’s a big choice to make. Very limiting.”

Paquin will return to the small screen on June 10, when True Blood Season 5 premieres.

Uber Feels The Brotherly Love, Begins Testing Its On-Demand Car Service In Philadelphia

uberphillyI use Uber all the time when I travel, and it's always sort of a bummer to come back home knowing it'll be weeks before I get to ride in another Uber towncar. Well, that's thankfully no longer the case -- according to a new post on the company's official blog, Uber has just soft-launched in Philadelphia and now has a small crew of their tell-tale black cars cruising around the city. And I do mean small -- a quick look at the app tells me that at time of writing, there are only two Uber cars currently available to ferry around folks around Philly. As is the usually the case for Uber, they intend to use their so-called "secret phase" to collect data about demand for the service in the city in preparation for a larger-scale launch down the line.

Microsoft granted patent for wearable EMG device

Microsoft granted patent for wearable EMG device

Those muscle spasms? They're now good for something. Okay, so Microsoft's just-granted patent for a wearable EMG device doesn't really thrive off of involuntary twitching and such, but it does use your movements to control your smartphone, notebook and other gadgets. The "Wearable Electromyography-Based Controller," which we first glimpsed back in 2010, uses sensors to interpret the electrical signals generated by a user's muscles, and then communicates with the wearer's computer via a wireless (or wired) connection. Redmond envisions the wearable device in various incarnations: as an armband equipped with sensors, a shirt, eyeglasses and even nodes attached directly to the user's body. In the armband example, motion control could be used to interact with a PMP while the user is jogging. No matter the setup, a calibration process allows the system to locate specific sensors and collect information based on specific gestures or movements, which means playing Guitar Hero with only an air guitar may someday be a reality after all.
